Learning Styles – alive and kickin' at Lakeland Schools

Learning Styles Lakeland Schools

Learning Styles is alive and well in the Lakeland Schools. With Dr. Favre moving to the Bridgehampton School District, Dr. Laura Sagan and Theresa Wilkowski are the co-directors of the Lakeland Center for Learning Styles.

As a Learning Styles District, great things are happening. One consistent, pervasive aspect is the assessment of students at the end of grades 2, 5, and 8. Students in grades 3 through 12 have been assessed with the appropriate Learning Style assessment and individual profiles are available for students, parents, and teachers. In addition, group profiles assist teachers to identify the unique combination of students they teach on a daily basis. Classrooms and libraries also have been redesigned to accommodate environmental preferences. Students respond well to the use of tactual materials and the introduction of new material in a Global and Analytic manner.

An exciting project is the development of the Learning Nook at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. The parents work as partners with teachers to collect donations in order to create a responsive, learning style classroom environment. Parents also make tactual materials to support grade level curriculum. The Learning Nook is being expanded to two other elementary schools and the middle school this year.

Lakeland teachers continue to be trained in the philosophy and implementation of learning styles in the classroom through workshops and in-service courses, as well as a Summer Institute. The Learning Styles Center is partnering with the Lakeland Education Foundation (LEF) to support the implementation of learning styles. The LEF currently funds larger learning styles projects and this year, a new LS mini-grant has been created. In addition, the Center provides teachers resources to make tactual and kinesthetic materials.

As co-directors, we look forward to enhancing student achievement through responsive differentiation based upon students’ learning styles.
